Rama Rao Sankurathripati has over 35 years of legal experience, including 15 years of work in the field of intellectual property. Among his areas of expertise are International Intellectual Property Law, Bilateral Investment Protection, International Environment Law, Sustainable Development, Technology and Innovation, and International IP Dispute Resolutions and Arbitration, particularly with reference to foreign investments, technology transfer, IP disputes resolution, and UNCITRAL commercial arbitration matters.

He currently serves as Transcarbon’s Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer Advisor. He is also a Senior Adviser at the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) and teaches International Intellectual Property Law at Pace Law School and International Law at the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), Columbia University, as Adjunct Professor. Previously, from 1998 to 2013, he was the Director of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Coordination Office in New York City and WIPO’s representative at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters. Among other assignments, he has acted as counsel on global licensing practice for prominent law firms, advised on legal matters related to WIPO’s dispute resolutions regime and domain names, worked with IP delegations of national governments, and issued reports of international IP cooperation and practice concerning commercial industries in specific countries in different regions of the world such as Asia-Pacific, Europe, and South America. Additionally, he has lectured on WIPO’s developments in several prestigious academic institutions and law schools in the United States of America on International Intellectual Property Law, including Columbia University, Fordham University, Franklin Pierce University, the Center for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP) in Seattle, Pace University, American University, and the University of New Mexico. Prior to developing his career at WIPO, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India for nearly 25 years and became its Chief Legal Adviser. Also, he served as the Legal Adviser at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN in New York City from 1995-1998.

Rama holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree with focus on International Law and a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree on International Law and International Organizations from Jawaharlal Nehru University (India), a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree with a Specialization in International Law and Legal Studies, and Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree from Andhra University (India) with honors, among other distinctions obtained throughout his career. He is a Member of the Bar Council of the High Court of Delhi in India and of the International Intellectual Property Society, as well as a Life Member of the Indian Society of International Law.

He is a national of India, resident in the United States of America, and a native Hindi and English speaker, with a working knowledge of French.
