Alessandro Sanches Pereira is an expert analyst on environmental policy, bioenergy systems, low-carbon transitions, and local development. He has more than 15 years of professional experience in consulting for private companies and the public sector.

Alessandro currently serves Transcarbon as Lead Low-Carbon Technology Expert for Brazil and Senior Consultant on Environmental Policy, Bioenergy, and Low-Carbon Transitions. Additionally, he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Brazilian Reference Center on Biomass (CENBIO). His research evaluates the link between income per capita and consumption patterns, to draw implications for future energy consumption and GHG emissions paths by mapping and comparing consumption patterns, and their evolution in France – an “old” industrialized economy – and Brazil, a rapidly emerging economy. As an independent consultant, he provides services for the United Nations (UN) project for enhancing sustainable tourism, clean production, and export capacity in the United Republic of Tanzania. His work presents a balanced analysis of the supply and demand structures of both organic agriculture and tourism sectors – especially hotels and lodging industry– by exploring policy alternatives to enhance linkages between the two sectors in Tanzania. Also, he has rendered services to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), supporting the UNCTAD’s BioFuels Initiative in the completion of the updated report on the international market and regulatory situation for biofuels at the Unit for Trade, Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development. Previously, he was a Member of the research project at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden, on “Sustainable supply chain management for bioenergy systems” within the division of Energy and Climate Studies (ECS), a cooperation between the European Union and Brazil. He participated in the research project on “Global Energy and Climate Studies”, a cooperation between KTH and the Swedish Energy Agency. In Brazil, he participated in the project to design the Solid Waste Management System in the municipalities of the Metropolitan Region of Campinas. He was a Member of the group assessing the new Brazilian Sanitation Law under request of the Brazilian Government.

Alessandro holds a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in Environmental Management and Planning from UNICAMP (Brazil), a Master’s degree (M.Sc.) in Environmental Management and Policy from Lund University (Sweden) and a Bachelor’s (B.Sc.) degree in Sanitation Technology from UNICAMP (Brazil). He is a member of the International Society of Industrial Ecology (ISIE) and the Editorial Board of the International Journal on Sustainable Agriculture Research of the Canadian Center of Science and Education.

He is a national of Brazil, a Portuguese native speaker, also fluent in English, with an intermediate knowledge of Spanish, and a basic working knowledge of Swedish.
